As part of the European project Explore Your Abilities, which promotes inclusive education through STEAM principles, a playful and engaging workshop brought children together to decode words, think logically, and collaborate, all while having fun with numbers and letters. This activity, called „Secret Word Code”, was specifically designed to support diverse learners, including children with special educational needs (SEN), in developing skills through creativity and communication.
Why Coding and Cryptography?
Early exposure to coding concepts helps children develop structured thinking, problem-solving abilities, and confidence in using logic, skills foundational not just to STEM, but to lifelong learning. In this workshop, the focus was not on complex programming, but on a simple cryptographic system that associates numbers with letters. It’s an ideal way to introduce young learners to coding ideas while strengthening language and math skills.
Workshop Objectives
This activity was designed to:
- Improve communication and teamwork skills.
- Develop logical thinking and basic mathematical reasoning.
- Help children recognize letters and build words in English.
- Make associations between numbers and letters using a simple cipher.
- Encourage creativity and inclusive participation in a multilingual context.
How the “Secret Word Code” Workshop Worked
Duration: 20 minutes
On-stage participants: 5 children
Audience: International children, including those with SEN
1. Introduction (2 minutes)
The facilitator greets the children and sets a playful tone:
„Today we’ll play a secret code game! You’ll be detectives who crack number codes and reveal hidden words. Are you ready?”
This framing excites curiosity and sets a clear, simple goal.
2. Code System Presentation (3 minutes)
Using a smartboard or large visual chart, the English alphabet is matched with numbers:
- A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 … Z = 26
Example: the code 3 – 1 – 20 translates to the word CAT. Children identify the letters, match them to the numbers, and say the word out loud. This step introduces the mechanics of the activity while keeping it fun and accessible.
3. On-Stage Coding Activity (10 minutes)
Each of the five children on stage receives a short numeric code (2–4 numbers). Their task:
- Decode each number into its corresponding letter.
- Work together to form a full word.
Examples include:
- DOG → 4-15-7
- SUN → 19-21-14
- RED → 18-5-4
- BEAR → 2-5-1-18
After the word is formed, the image of the word (e.g., a sun, a bear) is shown on the smartboard, reinforcing comprehension through visual association.
4. Audience Engagement (3 minutes)
Now it’s the audience’s turn to crack the code! The facilitator presents a full sentence in numeric form:
BE MY FRIEND → 2-5 13-25 6-18-9-5-14-4
Children raise cards or balloons marked with letters to reconstruct the phrase.
A bonus challenge involves decoding:
I LOVE YOU → 9 12-15-22-5 25-15-21
This part of the workshop is inclusive and engaging, allowing non-verbal or hesitant children to participate by showing a symbol or pointing at a letter. The joy of collaboration and shared discovery fills the room.
5. Closing and Celebration (2 minutes)
The facilitator concludes with cheers:
„Great job, everyone! You are now official word-code detectives!”
All children are acknowledged with symbolic “verbal certificates,” applause, and smiles, reinforcing a sense of achievement and belonging.
STEAM and Inclusion in Action
This workshop demonstrates how STEAM learning can be meaningful, inclusive, and adapted for all abilities:
- Science & Math – Logical reasoning through number-letter matching.
- Technology – Use of the smartboard and visual learning tools.
- Engineering – Structuring and decoding coded messages.
- Arts – Creative storytelling and visual interpretation.
- Language – Strengthening vocabulary and letter recognition in English.
Moreover, children with SEN were supported through:
- Visual aids and large-format materials.
- Opportunities for physical response (raising signs or balloons).
- Clear and repetitive instructions.
- Encouragement to participate in non-verbal ways.
Inclusivity isn’t just a value, it’s part of the design.
Key Takeaways
Secret Word Code is more than a coding game, it’s a gateway into STEAM learning that values fun, inclusion, and imagination. Through play and teamwork, children built not just words, but confidence, curiosity, and connections across languages and cultures.
Whether decoding “CAT” or declaring “I LOVE YOU,” one thing is clear: learning through play is powerful, and every child deserves a place in the puzzle.
